Genes, Circuits & Behavior.

Thousands of genes operate in the brain circuits, each at a different time and space, to control complex behavior in an animal. We are using molecular imaging techniques in Drosophila aiming to understand the genetic and neural basis of brain functions. Two main approaches are taken: (i) to reconstruct wiring diagrams of the whole brain; and (ii) to understand computation in specific circuits for innate as well as learned behaviors. We have constructed a standardized Drosophila model brain as a web-based 3D image database for archiving, searching and analysis of individual neurons. This allows a fast and full scale analysis of interconnections between elementary processing units, defined by the presence of population of local neurons, in a complete brain. Such a comprehensive description of inter-regional pathways provides an anatomical road map for the prediction of functional circuits in the Drosophila brain. We focus on understanding the computation process for olfactory, auditory, gustatory, sleep, and memory behaviors. Our goal is to investigate how genes, neurons, and neural circuits contribute to complex behaviors using Drosophila as the model system.

Wiring diagram. We have generated a standard Drosophila brain for archiving and analysis of individual neurons. We are trying to construct (i) a circuitry map showing connections among different neuropilar regions; and (ii) a map of synaptic connectivity among olfactory neurons.

Brain functions. We focus on understanding circuits and genes involving in the computation process for olfactory, auditory, gustatory, sleep, courtship, fighting, aging, fear, and learned behaviors.
